Twitter

I am using this site called Twitter and I am struggling to find the true use for it. What I am putting on Twitter and what everyone else is putting up is completely different. There are so many symbols that obviously mean something but I do not know what. All these #, @, RT before a name. What do they all mean?

So I am on a mission to find out what they all mean because Twitter obviously works for people so if it is going to work for me, I should use the site correctly.
